Lore: Aliyat Haratzon

Context: As should be evident from the many post I’ve made in the past, the fictional setting described in these posts is heavily influenced by forms of mysticism related to the Jewish Kabbalah. Do note, that from these fictional perspective, Jewish mysticism is not the source of these connections but the result of arcane teachings bleeding into the mundane world. In this excerpt, a mage considers some of these ideas, and how they relate to magical practices.


The old Mequbal used to say that when God experienced the delights of the Self, its will ascended to create the World and then rule over it.

The will of God to create, in their language, bore the name Aliyat Haratzon.

I would postulate that this is something we all experience; in addition to the delight of Self and Kingship, it is within all of us, made manifest in our Great Works.

It is to bring forth Dirah Betachtonim – so that the Ohr Ein Sof may dwell among us.


If it is your will to create, could you not create? Could you deny the exalted spark within you? The fractured divinity of Sophia bestowed upon you by the Cosmos?

There are those who say they could.

But their actions betray them. In their stillness, their minds call forth demons into their dreams and turn them to nightmares. For they are haunted by the spectres of what could have been but never was.

We are, in the end, cursed to bring the splendours of the Empyrean into this material realm. That is something we can run and hide away from, but we may never deny.

We give birth to visions of glory unknown. So our hearts bleed with unfulfilled ambition and unrequited love for this World and the other. It falls between our fingers like sand, counting the promises that cannot be fulfilled.

And that is the Tragedy of our existence.
